Digital Rust Surfaces

This is a range of surfaces that I developed from rust images....tomorrow I am CNC milling them out of foam and then casting them in aluminum.  Hopefully all goes well.

Functioning Building Skins

These are images from Adaptive Building Initiative's website-

This is firm that is really digging into some very interesting ways that a building can physically react to environmental conditions.

They have some interesting models of both shading and structural systems that can function in response to user needs.

Kinetic Architecture

Thru work I have recently become aware of this company called Turner Exhibits.  It looks like they do a lot of the design and fabrication for architects like  Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen.

This is a quote from their literature:

Turner Exhibits serves architects and designers by developing custom fabrication solutions for
museum exhibits, interpretive centers, kinetic architectural features and other exciting projects.
Small interdisciplinary teams evaluate solutions, plan, and carry out the production of each
project. We seek individuals who value collaboration and who bring a strong work ethic, positive
attitude, a love of problem solving and passion for fine craftsmanship.

I love that they design and then fabricate- seems like the best way to get something built right.

Very interesting projects......

spaceframe rendering

this is a quick rendering i did for a project i working on at work.  it is actually a carbon fiber spaceframe with invar metal connectors.  to give you an idea of scale the larger members are 200mm (approx 8") diameter.  Some pretty cool hardware at the connections- definitely some real architectural potentials.  It will probably be a few years before this project is actually constructed, but its been very cool to work on.
