design methods preliminary model

these are some images of our new 16"x16" panel design

the shingled glass will get attached to the backside of the curved profiled wood pieces- we are going to experiment with some finishes on the shingled pieces of glass.

the vertical shaded panel are going to be a fiberglass mesh

the pics below are some material studies that we worked on today- pretty happy with the progress so far.  

materials testing

these are some modeling test we did using fiberglass mesh- the pictures don't really show the fine texture of the individual fibers.  I think it is going to work well in our model.

this is bad picture of the curved piece of mdf we cut out- we came up with a fairly efficient system for cutting out double sided objects on the mill.  Can't wait until we can get back at it tomorrow.

detailing prototypes

some preliminary components for my art of detailing project.  these are some MDF pieces matt and I cut out  wednesday morning.  The final round I may cut out of foam and then cast them in aluminum....we'll see

old power hacksaw

found an old power hacksaw, cleaned it up a little bit and replaced the base

maybe not worth the time- but it was fun working on it.

I think it could be a cool addition to my shop once it is all finished

engraving

engraved some tags for my friend andy's business- pretty happy how they turned out

new craigslist find!

found a basically new craftsman 39pc set of tap and dies on craigslist- couldn't pass it up!

more progress on the panel

here are some pictures of our panel that frankie took a few minutes ago.  I had to leave a little early tonight to watch ava so I am missing all the fun and it is killing me!  me and ava almost went into the studio to work, but she would definitely have tried to eat the model pieces.  so thanks to frankie and matt for hanging around and pushing on without me.

we still have to tweak everything, but this was definitely a big step.
